I have wanted to do this for the Warhammer Quest tiles for a long time and now I have a good excuse to do so with the new Dungeon Bowl!
I had some 5mm foam core boards in my hobby supplies so I decided to just go for it and figure it out as I went.
Corridors. I pealed off the paper on one side and started by mapping out the grid of 34mm squares, cutting them with a hobby knife. Then I drew the lines again with a ballpoint pen making the tiles more defined and giving them a bit of a beveled edge.
I then rolled the tiles with a ball of tinfoil giving them a stone texture. I don't have a before and after shot but the foam is entirely smooth to start with and you can see the texture from rolling on the first corridor before I've started drawing in cracks.
I printed out the old Warhammer Quest Tiles. I tried to Scale them up to 34mm squares but if it was my measuring or the printer not printing to the scale I made it, I don’t know. It didn’t come out quite to scale but it was good enough to work with. With the grid already made I overlaid the Stencils over a section and drew in the cracks on top. Then removed the stencil and when over it again as I saw fit.
Large Rooms. Same thing on the firechasm. I might remove all the foam for the chasm and paint straight on the bottom.
Junctions. There is only one pattern for the old junction but I flipped my stencil over after I had used it once and could trace the reverse side giving me a mirrored junction tile. Lying like this it’s a bit obvious but in other arrangements I feel like they have the appearance of being two unique tiles.
Corners. I did the same thing here. It’s possible to spot the mirroring when you search for it but just this 90 degree turn makes it way less obvious.
However, it turns out that 5mm foam is a bit too thick for the magnets in my bases to get a proper grip on the sheet underneath. Even at 4mm once I had striped both papers off. So I'm looking at building my own hot wire cutter, to cut the foam thinner. Proxon table and a proper fence is probably smarter time investment but I can't justify getting this big tool and just using it once.
I wanted to make the tiles fully 3D so I went searching for some good Tomb/caskets. I found that this one in the "Shattered Dominion Objectives" box was just the right size, like it was made for this purpose. I still need to find a second one though.
The first place I went to look was the Garden of Morr set. They where a bit small and attached to the bases. They do feature on the tile though, so here is the lid from the set next to its image on the tile. The other small casket on the tile is also in the set but doesn't have a removable lid and is attached to a large base plate.
I will add magnets to the Tombs so you can play with the crypt room empty. In this way I can use all the squares and plop down the terrain, allowing me to use one of them for the old Warhammer Quest room tile that also has a tomb on it.
There where several other things in the "Shattered Dominion Objectives" set that would work well in the dungeon, particularly some Arcane Machinery, Treasure chests, Books and potions. I got this throne out from one of the Storm of Magic Fulcrums "Magewrath Throne and Balewind Vortex" terrain sets.
Here you can see the books and potions in the back. If you take out the arcane machinery the base has cogs in the centre surrounded by the winds of magic glyphs so could work as a special portal?
The chests from the Shattered Dominion almost feel more to scale than the actual Dungeon Bowl chests. On the image above you can see both types for comparison. The throne is pushing it a bit, with how much it protrudes on either side, but it does allow the seat to be utilised as a tile in it's own right.
