Blood Bowl Fit

Ben at the Bonehead Podcast uploaded a video about gamifying getting fit and it resonated with me. I have never liked the idea of running I'll be honest, but getting to know my stats as a Blood Bowl player intrigued me. Here is the link to the video but I'll embed it below as well.

Ben has created a Google spreadsheet you can copy and fill in that will convert your personal efforts into your stats as a Blood Bowl player. This includes: your weight, how fast you can run 5km and how many push ups you can do in one set. As well as stats, it suggests new goals for you to aim for, which is fun. Here is a link for the file.

My first attempt wasn't glorious. I hadn't managed to take a run, so had no data for this. Ben had aimed at running 5km in 50 minutes and managed it in 40 so, I played it safe and estimated that I could do it in 60. My stat line was:

MA ST AG PA AV
2 1 5+ 6+ 9+

I am not the first player I would hire. So,  I made sure I got to the gym and got on a treadmill for the first time ever. Yes. EVER.  I can't say I rate the experience highly, I find it very hard when speeding up and slowing down, and not being an experienced runner (or that fit), I need to slow down after running at speed for a few minutes. My time came in better than expected though.

The strength stat is calculated based on how many pushups you can do combined with your body weight. I've lost some weight since the first time I created my stats which forced me to do more pushups for better stats. I managed to do enough push ups to compensate for my weight loss and reach strength 2!  My new stats:

MA ST AG PA AV
5 2 4+ 5+ 8+

It looks like I'm squarely halfling territory, which I think is reasonable and relateable. I'm not in my best shape and I do like a good snack. I'm only 2.5ft too tall, but I'm one in spirit.

I believe the Agility stat is derived from running speed so don't think I can move that up without increasing my Movement Allowance stat. I don't know how generous Ben been with the stats but the lofty goal of a human lineman doesn't seem unattainable so watch this space.

In a later video Ben talks about doing some throwing with a football to figure out passing stats (at the moment it uses your running time). Until he uploads that video, I have done some calculations of my own and might give it a try:

  • A Blood Bowl pitch is 100x60 paces according to the lore
  • 1 pace = 0.762 m
  • Therefore 76.2m x 45.72m.
  • So now we need to know how big a square is. The Blood Bowl pitch we use is 26 x 15 squares.
  • That doesn't evenly divide up to the paces per square. We end up with 2.930769230769231m x 3.048m rectangles.
  • I will decide that one square is close enough to 3 meters squared.

Having established that a square is 3 meters we can refer to our passing chart and see that:

Pass Squares Meters
Quick pass 1-3 3-9
Short pass 4-6 12-18
Long pass 7-10 21-30
Long Bomb 11-13 33-39

These numbers don't tell me a lot until I go out and measure some distances up, but a Quick Pass seems very achievable while a Long Bomb not so much. Don't know if I'll fashion myself a measuring wheel or if I'll go for a long rope. Think I need to lay out some rope to identify a target square. I will also need to get a pump and a plug for my slightly deflated ball.
