Vampire team Vargheist/Vargskyr conversion

Blood Bowl Vampire Team Conversions Vargheist Vargskyr Conversion

Geheimnisnacht has almost come around again so, here is an update on the vampire team post. I have built the team and I really love how Games Workshop have put the thralls together. The arms come in pairs that link with pairs of torsos, so even though sprue limitation means you are using the same bits (4 different right arms and torsos) it creates 8 very different but coherent models with some very clever posing. I was sitting assembling them, revelling in the ingenius solutions they have come up with.

Blood Bowl Vampire Team Thrower and Blitzer Conversion

In usual fashion I went about removing the ball from players and installing magnets instead. I felt the wing was more appropriate on the blitzers as their bloodlust trait is worse than that of the throwers, signalling that they are becoming more animalistic and closer to the Vargheist. I gave the blitzer’s arm to the thrower and carved off the vambrace, I still need to do a bit of sculpting work to restore the sleeve to its luscious puffiness.

I’m still not keen on the pink fleshy thorn skin or the massive winged aesthetic of the Vargheists from Games Workshop. That applies to both the Blood Bowl version and the plastic 3 pack for Age of Sigmar. In my previous post I was talking about getting the Vargheist big guy from Brutefun Miniatures but, I decided to have a go at a conversion instead.

Cursed City Vargskyr Blood Bowl Vampire Team Vargheist Conversion

Back in 2022 I got a copy of Cursed City when it was rereleased. Alas, as prophesied, I haven’t played it. I blame Games Workshop’s handling of the release, the fact that they dropped support for this game around a week after release and the whole thing (nothing to do with me at all…). This means I have an unused Vargskyr model which, on closer inspection, must have been the main inspiration for Brutefun’s miniature.

The scale pictures are from the site Minicompare I’ve just found it so can’t vouch fully for it’s accuracy but I think it uses Games Workshop head-on photos and base sizes to scale the pictures, which should make it accurate. The Vargskyr is still too tall for my liking and it’s arms are too spread out, but I had a plan for that.

Cursed City Vargskyr Bits

I have not read the Age of Sigmar lore on the Vargskyr, but there seems to a wolf influence going on, which gels with the whole Cursed City concept. But I didn’t want a werewolf/werebat thingy so, I chopped off some of the more wolfy bits and brought in some more bat. I am aware the creature I creating is a ‘vargheist’ which is obviously from the word ‘wolf’, but I just want bats okay? Here are some cute bats:

I have chopped off the wolf tail and will be adding back a bit shorter bat like stumpy tail. I will add a bit more to the nostrils as I feel like they brought the nose closer towards wolf. The ears are also a bit wolf like but will leave them for now. Once finished, I will revaluate my stance on them. Similarly I might want to add a bit of wing skin in the armpit area.

Blood Bowl Vampire Team Vargheist Conversion Bits Sawed apart

I cut off the rock under the left foot to make that leg grounded, giving the Vargheist a more hunched over pose. I sawed off the right leg from the torso and the tiny bit of the leg attached to the front torso bit. I then split the knee and the ankle. After this picture, the weird shoulder wings (that don’t make any sense to me) got cut off, the area will be covered by shoulder pads. I also cut off the right leg’s toe to allow for better a angle in line with the ground.

I started by threading the leg bits on some wire to figure out the right pose for the leg.

Then, once I decided on a position, I put some Milliput/Green Stuff mix in the joints to hold it in place.

I will next proceed to sculpt the leg back together and then attach it at the hip and clean up that area. More to follow.
